Jennifer Szabo | Flute & Piccolo

Jennifer is a freelance flutist in the DC and NYC metro areas. She is the Principal Piccolo for the Northern Neck Orchestra, and was the previous Second Flutist of the McLean Symphony (2021-2023). She was a semi-finalist for the recent Maryland Symphony Principal Flute opening (2023), and most recently won Second Prize at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention (2024). As a soloist she has worked with the Adelphi University Symphony Orchestra where she performed Bach's Fourth Brandenburg Concerto, as well as with the National Concert Band where she played Cecile Chaminade’s Concertino. She regularly substitutes with many local orchestras in the DC area, including the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Opera Society, and the Opera Comique de Washington.

She was an Adirondack Performing Arts fellow, serving as Principal Flutist during their 2018 and 2019 seasons. She was a finalist for the Queens College Concerto Competition (2019), the U.S Army, “Pershing’s Own” National collegiate solo competition (2019, 2023), and the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition (2020). She has performed at prestigious venues to include Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, David Geffin Hall, and Capital one Hall. She has also served on the Board of Directors for the New York Flute Club (2020-2023).

Jennifer received her Bachelors in Flute Performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College where she studied with Judith Mendenhall, Principal Flutist of the ABT Orchestra and Mannes, and Keith Underwood of the Mannes and NYU. 

She is a current Masters candidate at the George Mason University School of Music with Julianna Nickel, and lives with her husband David (first tenor with the U.S. Army Chorus, “Pershing’s Own”) in Alexandria, VA. When not with her flute, she can be seen hiking, baking, drinking coffee, or reading voraciously.
